Default Succession planning: what is it?

Succession planning has been one of the aims of our HR team this year, but what is it really? I thought that each position has an incumbent and one of his staffers would be next in line? Am I wrong?

Actually succession planning is when you are able to determine future leaders in your organisation to fill in key posts. It just makes sense that these identified successors would be trained and moulded accordingly.

The good news is that more than half of UK's business have a plan in place when it comes to succession planning.

I think that unlike before, succession planning is quite tricky now as it would also allow for outsiders to become successors. Unlike before where the successor comes from within the organisation...

The thing is, succession planning is not really that easy to do or manage now, because there is no formula to it. It will depend on how your organisation is and how good your people are. But you have to make sure that you have leaders who are well-rounded and very able. They should have hands-on experience on a lot of roles and that your organisation should be robust enough to be flexible.

I'd agree that it would be difficult to implement succession planning for every key position that you have. But as long as you have the general framework for it you would be fine. You could easily apply these framework to a specific department or position. You just need to finetune it
