Default Alcohol and drugs policies

Does your office or organisation have a clear policy regarding alcohol and drug consumption? When do you say the policy regarding these are comprehensive and when do you say it's not?

We are just informed that consumption of alcohol and drugs is not allowed during work hours. And that employees should not report for work while under the influence. For me this policy is clear, I don't know whether it's considered comprehensive or not, because really, what else does it need to say?

When you say that an alcohol/drug policy is comprehensive, it should explicitly outlaw the possession and consumption of illegal drugs in the workplace as well as attending to work while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Then it should restrict the consumption of alcohol in the workplace to appropriate social situations as well as the possession and use of prescription drugs in the workplace.

Well, working under the influence of alcohol or under the influence of drugs can be easy to miss, especially at first. How do you detect and enforce the policy?

Simple. By drug and alcohol testing. Employees who have been involved in an accident or in a workplace incident, especially that which involves violence, need to be tested.

How about random drug testing? Is that ok for employers to carry out a random drug test?

A random drug test is only appropriate when it comes to employees working in safety critical roles.
