Default Extension of maternity leaves, not entirely good news?

I'm sure you have heard about the EU's plans to extend the amount of time you could go on maternity leave with full pay right? Now it seems that the British Chamber of Commerce might think that it's a bad idea! The BCC says that UK organisations could fast higher costs that trnaslates to £2.5 billion a year!

I think I agree with them. The current 6 weeks should be enough. More than tripling it would be cumbersome!

The new plan is to pay the new mother full pay right? Not 90% then statutory pay as it is today? The 20 weeks should be a reduction, not an additonal benefit isn't it?

No... the EU plans are sayingthat instead of 6 weeks of 90% pay then statutory maternity pay for 33 weeks, you should pay 20 weeks at full pay and then pay statutory maternity pay for the rest of the 39 weeks.

The BCC thinks that these new plans are not affordable, given the state of most organisations.

I liked their earlier proposal to extend the maternity leaves to 18 weeks. But instead of getting full pay, it is up to different states how much they are going to pay. This way, the state would know how much their organisations could afford.

Our company pays more than the statutory maternity pay. I think it gives our new mothers more reason to come back to work.

I agree, so the proposal really won't hurt organisations that much, except for those who pay their employees the lowest salaries and benefits.

Personally, I don't think that the extended maternity leaves is going to cost that much. It would cost more, true. But with organisations already spending the money currently, the additional expenses should be minimal.

You have to change your SS card first. They'll want to see the wedding certificate, birth certificate, two pieces of mail bearing your new name and your new SS card at the DMV.
