Default mentoring vs. coaching

Is there really a technical difference between coaching and mentoring? Or should these two be taken to mean the same thing?

According to the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, there is a difference between coaching and mentoring. Many of the processes in these two are quite the same, so the main difference lies in the fact that coaching and mentoring are delivered by people possessing different qualifications.

For one, a mentor is generally more experienced and qualified than the person to be mentored. Usually, the mentor is a senior person in the organisation capable of passing on his knowledge and experience and f opening doors to opportunities that would otherwise be out of the individual's reach.

A coach, meanwhile, is not necessarily someone who possesses a direct experience of the individual's occupational role, unless if the coaching is skills-focused.

From what I understand, mentoring is more informal and meetings take place as and when the person to be mentored needs advice, support and guidance. Coaching, on the other hand, is generally more structured and meetings are scheduled on a regular basis.

Mentoring is relatively more long-term and takes a broader view of the individual. Moreover, the focus of mentoring is career and personal development. Coaching, on the other hand, is short-term and more centered on particular development areas and issues.

There's also differences in the agenda. The agenda in mentoring is set by the individual to be mentored, and the mentor provides support and guidance to prepare the mentee for specific future roles. With coaching, the agenda is more about achieving specific immediate goals. Mentoring also revolves around developing the individual as a professional, while coaching revolves more around specific development areas.
