Default The BBC

I'm reading about the spike of cases against the BBC alleging sex and age discrimination filed by female employees. I could relate to these cases because I was once a victim of the glass ceiling. It's just sad that an institution like the BBC is under fire for these!

I can answer this waterhotter:

The glass ceiling is when there are no or disproportionately small percentage of women holding management or upper management positions in your company. This is apparent when there are top female talents who are being passed over for promotion just because they belong to the wrong gender. It also shows when female workers get less pay for about the same work done by their male colleagues.

The sad thing is that there are a lot of other companies that still have the boy's club thinking. And about the BBC, I am appalled at the charges that have been brought against them. They should be one of the models of equal rights and respect at the workplace!

Gender discrimination does not only cover promotions and equal pay, but also employment contracts, recruitment, benefits, redundancy selection and dismissal. And contrary to what you people think, it could also involve men not just women.

A quick question: One of my former employers had a management training programmes and opened it for women only. One of my colleagues commented that it was "positive action" not sexual harassment, could he be right?

Well, in a sense, he MIGHT be right. It really depends on what the aims of the programme were, and of course the situation of your previous employer. If management wanted to accommodate more women on its management teams and found that they needed the training, then it was positive action. If there are already enough or more women in management, then it was gender discrimination.
