Default Gender discrimination in other countries

Gender Discrimination

I relocated to the Philippines for a time, and I got to tell you that they have the worst case of gender discrimination over there. Right from the time they post a job wanted ad, you would find something like "female only" or "male only". They have so much discrimination that potential employers waste valuable newspaper ad space by including the line "male" or "female" as one of the job's requirements!

I am so glad that we are very much protected here.

That is true, some cultures tolerate even promote gender discrimination. But that doesn't mean that it doesn't happen here. I worked for a company that hired only men for its computer and engineering positions (which were higher paying) and only women for receptionists, secretaries and assistants. It was brought to their attention, but upper management dismissed it as coincidence, nothing more.

But still, I am sure that gender discrimination worked on some level. Either the HR manager or the department manager had intended it or not, surely in the course of my former company's life there had been qualified female applicants for engineering vacancies... and surely there should be men who are good assistants as well?

The problem with gender discrimination is that it is usually difficult to pinpoint behaviors and patterns that prove it. To be sure, it is going to be more difficult to prove in cases of recruitment. The manager hiring the person could say the he "felt" that this applicant was better than others and that they got along better than others. The fact that managers have this leeway could be open for abuse, but admit it, as a manager would you hire somebody that you don't feel at ease with???

Gender discrimination does exist, unfortunately. It's just difficult to pinpoint as you said.

In our office, however, we are proud to practice equality. Training, compensation, and advancement are open to anyone who wants it. The only qualification is competence. And to prove it, management has even abolished different restrooms for men and women!

It's a sad thing really that countries in this age and time do put up with gender discrimination. In Japan, women are working as secretaries and in rank and file position. It is very rare to see a woman occupying a managerial post in traditional businesses!
