I was wondering about the same thing. My friend and I were walking when I saw this poster announcing job openings at the local church. They needed storeclerks for the store that was run by the church. It said there "Methodists only" I pointed it out to my friend who said that it's normal, you can't have people from other faiths in a Methodist church. Was he right?
NOPE. I think that it should be clear religious discrimination if they enforce this. But it would be difficult to prove if the person applying for the job does not get the job first. The church could reason that Candidate A (who happens to be Methodist) was better qualified than Candidate B.
I think it's not allowed by law. I can say for sure that there is a landmark decision meted out by the Charity Commission on Catholic Care. Catholic Care refused to let gay couples adopt from them saying that they were funded by the Catholic church. Catholic Care sought an exemption to be able to continue denying gay couples their services. Charity Commission said that it's a no go.
I agree. The nature of your organisation should not be an excuse to be discriminatory in your recruitment policies OR even in dealing with customers and choosing who you give your service to.
It would still be classed as discrimination, especially since there is no fundamental requirements in the jobs mentioned that a person of another faith could not manage
