Default Has anyone ever experienced race discrimination?

Hi!

I have to be honest, I have never experienced proper race discrimination in the owrk place. I mean I don't always get on with the people that I work with, don't get me wrong! I just have never experienced any kind of actual discimination.

Has anyone here ever had this then?

HB

PS - I live in london, and I have to say, it has even been years since I have even had anything shouted at me. In the last five years, I would say that the one time I have had racial abuse (someone shouted Paki at me) it was actually well outside of london. I really think that things have changed for the better, and I hope that they stay that way.

Hi HappyBrian:

Good question, I was thinking though that it's in the wrong place?

To answer you, I haven't really experience race discrimination, either done to my person or with other people. We are lucky to live at a time where race is no longer an issue.

I'd hate to say this but as much as outward racial discrimination is a thing of the past for most of us today, it still persists but not in a way that is overt. I think that most people do not like being called racists so they tend to hide their prejudices to themselves.

I agree! It only comes out when we are sure that our prejudices are not traced back to us. But I'm sure you read a news item about a black guy being held for questioning in murder and you would think he's guilty. You will always have this preconceived notions about a certain set of people.

I see this pattern in recruitment. Our managers tend to have good recommendations for people who come from certain races even though our psychological tests reveal otherwise!

Hi all.

I think that it's normal to have prejudices, but it's really important that we are able to come through and decide for ourselves and set aside these prejudices.

I agree with that. All our experiences give us a certain set of beliefs that we might later on discard or keep forever. That's human nature. But the ability to set aside those and use your brains is priceless.

I think that it's nice to have that kind awareness. And to be educated and exposed to a diverse set of people also helps too, because it breaks stereotypes and lets you understand them more.

Hi I think that that is a great suggestion. The only way for you to end discrimination is to educate the people around you and yourself, as well as mingle with them.

I get what you guys are saying. It's like if you think all Asians are intelligent and you encounter an Asian that was not really a whiz, you'd know to lower your expectations next time.
