Red face 65 on June 29 given notice of retirement Friday 13 May

In january this year I sent a letter to my employer confirming my wish to stay on after 65 (June 29 11). Yesterday I had a meeting with a manager who asked if I wished to stay, he then asked me to leave the office while he contacted HR, when I returned he informed me that my request has been denied and this will be confirmed in writing. It is only weeks away and I am in total shock. I have been a good employee, no health problems and my job as a security officer is not arduous in any way and I cannot understand the reasoning behind the decision particuarly as a colleague who is also 65 and has been given a 12 month contract to stay on after this date. I loved my job, the people I work with and the hours. From search the internet I thought I should be given 6 month's notice not 6 weeks and wonder if a mistake has been made. Advice would be very welcome.
